Connection and Interdependence

The truth is we all need each other...

Interdependence is the way of life. Whatever you have right now is in large part because of the effort and generosity of many others, some who you might know, but most who you will never meet. Generosity comes in many forms. We can give though effort, time, attention, dedication, commitment, as well as through material means. Each day our lives are touched repeatedly by the generosity of others and yet so often we remain unaware of this. It's amazing how our minds generate the illusion of self-sufficiency. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The food you're eating is a gift from the earth and the hard work of others. Food requires a healthy earth, sunshine, soil, water and the generosity of so many people to get it to your table. As I sit here eating a blueberry I allow my mind to wander back to the possible beginning of this blueberry. How much has transpired, how much hard work has taken place for me to now be enjoying it. How can I not be in awe of our interdependency? How can I not be grateful? How can I believe that I can do this life alone?

Are you driving a car today? From the creation and formation of the metal to the assembly of the car, the earth and many people make it possible for you to be driving. Do you have the luxury of living in a home? Can you pause and begin to imagine how much effort went into creating the various rooms in your home? I don't necessarily mean the decorating, but the actual building of the furniture, the creation of the materials that your room is made from. How many steps did it take to develop the paint that is on your walls? How many people participated in the process?

For today, see how often you can bring awareness to the interdependency of your life.
